Get ready Corangamite, it’s time to liven up and brighten up!

Imagine a sea of giant yellow sunflowers from one end of the Shire to the other; at farm gates, along township fences, in school yards, shopfront windows and church grounds.

Corangamite Shire Council is calling on residents to help make it happen and spread some cheer and happiness with the launch of ‘SunBurst Corangamite’.

Shire COVID-19 Recovery Officer Helen Arundell said free sunflower seed packs, supplied by Hewitt and Whitty Rural Supplies, were available from designated outlets for residents to pick up and plant along their front fences or at their farm gates where everyone can see them.

“Set to bloom throughout the New Year, the sunflowers will create a bright start for 2021 for residents and entice visitors to Corangamite to take a drive and discover everything it has to offer while they are here,” she said.

Children will also add to the fun with their sunflower art creations and colour-ins decorating windows and cafes across the shire, while Hewitt and Whitty Rural Supplies has a $100 voucher up for grabs for the person who grows the largest sunflower bloom

“The ideal time for planting is now, with the flowers set to bloom throughout the New Year. So, don’t delay, pick up your seed pack and join in the fun,” Ms Arundell said.

Free sunflower seed packs can be collected from the Camperdown Civic Centre, the Derrinallum, Lismore, Cobden, Timboon and Terang post offices, Mount Emu Creek Café Skipton, Simpson Take-away, The Shed in Noorat and the Port Campbell Visitor Information Centre.

This is a Corangamite Shire specific project, so you must be a Shire resident to receive the seeds.
