Supporting Australian parents and their families

The Albanese Government is providing $40.6 million to Triple P International to help them deliver free, online parenting education and mental health support to Australian parents and carers of children under 12.

Half of all adult mental health challenges emerge before the age of 14. However, more than half of Australian children with mental ill-health aren’t getting professional help and seven out of ten parents aren’t confident they could recognise the signs of mental ill-health in their child.

The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program will help parents and carers to support the mental health and wellbeing of their children now, and into the future.

With this program, parents can access self-paced online training, with interactive and easy-to-navigate resources and learning tools, to better support their child’s mental health at key developmental stages, from birth to 11 years.

Triple P is also commencing a national campaign to reach all parents and carers, including those from diverse communities and at-risk populations, to promote the value of parenting programs. The campaign will focus on reducing stigma around parents seeking support and help for their children and themselves.

Originally developed in Australia, Triple P has been delivering parenting education and support initiatives for over 35 years and is ranked number one on the United Nations’ list of parenting programs.

The Albanese Government is proud to support initiatives like Triple P, so young Australians and their families can get the care they need.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister, Emma McBride MP:

“The Albanese Government is committed to a national approach to mental health and wellbeing, and suicide prevention so we can make sure all Australians, including young children and their parents, have the support they need.

“Unfortunately, many people feel like they can’t ask for help or support because of the stigma surrounding mental health.

“That’s why the work of organisations like Triple P is so important – so parents and carers know there is support available for themselves and their children, and their mental health is a priority.”

Quotes attributable to Triple P International Country Director, Carol Markie-Dadds:

“This funding means that all families with young children in Australia will have free access to Triple P’s evidence-based, online, Positive Parenting Programs, supporting parents and carers with a toolbox of strategies to build their children’s resilience, including their emotional and coping skills – benefitting them now and as they get older.

“Now more than ever, parents, carers, and children are living with increased levels of anxiety and stress due to the pandemic, disasters, and financial pressures. Triple P’s online programs will give parents and carers the tools and confidence they need to support their children’s mental health and wellbeing in these times of uncertainty and beyond.

“Triple P helps parents feel confident, enjoy being a parent, and build better relationships with their children, creating long lasting benefits into their teenage years and beyond.”
