Supporting Tasmania’s Tourism Industry

Peter Gutwein,Premier and Minister for Tourism

With our Roadmap to Recovery in place and gradual easing of restrictions to support a safe reboot of our economy, it’s positive to see innovative partnerships to assist industries hard hit by the pandemic.

This includes the new partnership between the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania (TICT) and the University of Tasmania, which offers industry-relevant places on scholarship, providing people at no cost study options usually worth thousands of dollars.

The initiative provides eligible Tasmanians the option to complete a new Graduate Certificate, in either Business Studies or Tourism, Environmental and Cultural Heritage, providing an opportunity for people to upskill during the COVID-19 related downturn in the tourism and hospitality sector.

The Tasmanian Government has provided unprecedented levels of support to our community and our business sector, including our tourism and hospitality industry through a $1 billion support package which provides:

  • Measures to either freeze, waive or cap Government fees and charges for small businesses, including water and electricity;
  • Payroll tax waivers to those in the hospitality and tourism sectors so they pay no payroll tax for 2019-20;
  • Support for international visa holders and their sectors;
  • $50,000 for TICT training and support; and
  • Access to interest free loans up to a value of $250,000

We will continue to work with our industries and business sector, including tourism and hospitality, as we take our first steps towards recovery and begin rebuilding a stronger Tasmania.
