Suspicious unit fire at Kingston

Police are investigating a suspicious unit fire at Kingston this morning.

Around 5.15am, police were called to a unit on Mayes Avenue after a report that it was on fire.

Emergency services attended the fire was quickly extinguished.

A 29-year-old male resident was the sole occupant at the time and escaped by breaking a window at the rear of the unit and climbing out. He received some minor lacerations by doing so but was otherwise uninjured.

The fire caused considerable damage to the downstairs interior of the unit, but no structural damage to the complex.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been deliberately lit using an accelerant at the front sliding screen door.

Investigations continue.
