During “Communicating Mathematics,” a four-day workshop Aug. 8-11, faculty from several universities will lead discussions on what it takes to communicate effectively among mathematicians, to students, and to the public.
“Almost all our speakers are mathematicians, who can speak about the challenges of math communication from the inside,” said Kathryn Mann, associate professor of mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences, who organized the event to foster effective math communication in research, teaching and even social justice
Offered in person and online, the workshop is supported by the National Science Foundation and the Cornell Department of Mathematics (A&S). The registration deadline is July 14.
Among other speakers, Steven Stogatz, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Applied Mathematics (A&S) will share insight on speaking with the public about math. Other topics include: communicating broader impacts of research, communicating change, advocating for your department, outreach with future mathematicians, and many more.
