Tasmania going backwards under Liberals

Tasmanian Labor

New data out today shows Tasmania is going backwards under the Liberal government – contradicting the Premier’s claims that the state’s economy is booming.

Shadow Treasurer Shane Broad said the latest State Final Demand figures show Tasmania is the only state to record a decline in the December quarter.

“Just yesterday, Peter Gutwein was claiming the economy was booming and business investment was growing strongly,” Dr Broad said.

“But today’s figures show State Final Demand in Tasmania fell by 1.5 per cent in the December quarter, well below the national average of a 2.9 per cent increase.

“Particularly concerning was a sharp drop in private capital investment – almost three times worse than the next-worse result in any other jurisdiction.

“The Premier’s boasting and bluster are not borne out by the data and it is clear that Tasmanian families, businesses and individuals are suffering the effects.

“Cost-of-living pressures are already hurting far too many Tasmanians and that is only going to get worse in an economy in reverse.

“The Premier is not getting the basics right when it comes to economic management and is not delivering what he promised Tasmanians.”
