Tasmania’s rental crisis continues to worsen as prices continue to
soar past rentals in major cities across Australia, according to CoreLogic’s
latest Quarterly
Rental Report.
The report shows that over the last decade Hobart rentals have
increased the most out of any capital city in Australia, at nearly 70 per cent.
This means that the average renter is now forced to fork out an
extra $11,400 per year.
Hobart’s most affordable suburb, Claremont, with an average weekly
rent of $442, has surpassed Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide’s
most affordable suburbs.
In fact, the most affordable units available in Hobart are more
than $100 a week, or $5000 a year, more expensive than the most affordable
units in Sydney.
Tasmanians who are doing it toughest in the middle of a health,
housing and cost of living crisis are also being exposed to the highest rents
of any state at the ‘affordable’ end of the market.
All Tasmanians deserve a safe place to call home but this
government is more concerned about building an unnecessary $750 million stadium
than focussing on the needs of Tasmanians struggling to get by.
After years of failing to get the basics right on housing, this government needs to act now to ease the rental crisis in Tasmania.
