Tasmanians are paying for both sides of the Liberals’ secret legal fees scandal

Premier Jeremy Rockliff has extraordinarily admitted that Tasmanians are paying nearly $1 million on legal fees on both sides of secret legal dispute between former Liberal Ministers and the Integrity Commission.

Tasmanian taxpayers now know that they have spent $405,000 on Jane Howlett’s secret court case – an increase of $100,000 in just three months. When you add in Madeleine Ogilvie and Mark Shelton’s costs, the tally approaches $550,000.

As the tab continues to rise for taxpayers on legal fees for the Liberals, a question on notice from Estimates has revealed the Integrity Commission has also spent $317,545.19 on legal costs for its investigations since 2022-23.

During Budget Estimates the Integrity Commission confirmed that Supreme Court action could prevent an Integrity Commission report from being released.

Despite Madeleine Ogilivie disclosing that she had initiated Supreme Court proceedings, the Government still won’t answer questions about whether or not Jane Howlett has done the same.

The Liberals’ secret legal fee scandal continues to burn a hole in the pocket of Tasmanians. As at today, that hole is already approaching a whopping $1 million

After 13 years of waste Premier Rockliff has put Eric Abetz in charge of cutting jobs and services to pay for it, yet he can somehow still make room to fund the Liberals’ secret legal fees.
