Technology Crime Services arrest

A 41-year-old Director of an Information Technology (IT) company is due to be sentenced in the Perth District Court on 30 October 2020 after he was arrested by officers from the WA Police Technology Crime Services and charged with the Commonwealth offence of ‘Without authorisation modified data held in a computer to cause impairment.’

The IT company managed a database and cloud storage solution on behalf of a telecommunications provider. It is alleged between 24 January 2017 and 14 February 2017 the telecommunications provider experienced a number of service interruptions as a result of unauthorised access to their networks.

It is alleged further investigations by the telecommunications provider and their engineers identified the 41-year-old man had connected to their network and deleted a number of user accounts which resulted in their clients not being able to do business. The damage to the telecommunications provider and their respective clients was estimated at approximately $2M.

The telecommunications provider reported the incident on the Cyber.gov.au website and the matter was referred to the WA Police, Technology Crime Services for further investigation.
