Tenders out for new homes at Gapuwiyak and Borroloola

NT Government

A remote community on the banks of the picturesque Lake Evella is set to become the scene of a housing boom, with tenders for 28 new homes in Gapuwiyak released today.

The northeast Arnhem Land community has helped to plan the new homes, and will be involved in all aspects of construction.

The Territory Labor Government has already delivered 20 new homes in Gapuwiyak and has extended and improved five homes under its innovative Room to Breathe program.

A tender has also been released for five new homes to be built at Borroloola’s Garawa 2 town camp.

The new works are part of the Homebuild program, under which more than 1255 new homes will be delivered across the NT. Around 700 of these are either completed or underway.

Since coming to Government in 2016 the Territory Labor Government has spent more than $982 million on remote housing and related infrastructure, with $454 million worth of works currently in the pipeline.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps Chansey Paech:

“Following on from the Territory Labor Government’s $432 million investment in land servicing, we are now seeing an escalation in building works.

“Tenders for these housing works in Gapuwiyak and Borroloola are part of a current $276 million rollout so we expect to have more big announcements soon.

“Our remote housing program, which represents a $2.1 billion investment, is not only about better housing, it is about accredited training, creating jobs, and building more sustainable communities.”
