Thank you to our responders as efforts continue

Peter Gutwein,Premier

As efforts continue in what is an incredibly complex rescue effort in and around Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s West Coast, I want to extend my thanks, on behalf of all Tasmanians, for the tireless work of all our responders.

The incident continues to be coordinated by the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment, with support and resources from Tasmania Police and other relevant authorities, as well as support from a range of community groups, the local community and private companies.

Every whale saved is an incredible outcome given the complicated conditions and is testament to the tireless and skilful work that the response team are undertaking.

I’ve continued to make it clear that if additional resources are required, we will not hesitate to organise the support needed.

I would like to thank those hard working crews on the ground and all those who have assisted in the response, including the Strahan community for assisting in the rescue efforts, not only directly but also those who have been feeding, accommodating and providing general support to the response team.

At times like these, Tasmanians come together to respond as quickly and compassionately as possible.

Our thoughts are with the response team who have another few tough few days ahead and I once again thank them, on behalf of all Tasmanians, for the incredible work that they have done this week.
