Griffith City Council has welcomed news that the Federal and NSW governments have fast tracked an agreement to get $6 million in roadworks underway on Barber Road at Benerembah.
Mayor John Dal Broi said the Barber Road announcement is great news for Griffith, especially for farmers who add so much to the economic output of our area.
“Council staff put together a high-quality application which was clearly very competitive and met the objectives of the Fixing Local Roads Program.
“We’ve worked closely with our farmers and industry to make a co-contribution in order to secure this grant commitment,” said Councillor Dal Broi.
Federal MP Sussan Ley said upgrading between Brogden Road and the Grainlink site will commence as soon as possible and tops the list of funding for the Farrer electorate through Round 2 of the Fixing Local Roads Program.
“Fixing Local Roads is a grant-based program where councils can apply for funding to repair, patch, maintain and seal priority local roads.”
“Barber Road is a vital link route for transport, farm vehicles and the school bus run but becomes treacherous when wet, and was clearly in need of a fix,” Ms Ley said.
Member of the NSW Legislative Council Wes Fang said a string of local road upgrades will make traveling safer for farmers, residents and students.
“This is mostly funding for smaller projects which will make a big difference in people’s lives as they travel to and from work or school.
“Not only will this get people where they need to go sooner and safer, the roadworks will also create much needed jobs in our community,” Mr Fang said.
Funding for Griffith is one of 108 road projects across 90 different local government areas, with the Australian and NSW Governments committing $691m – more details on the program are available here.
The Barber Rd project cost $6,090,000 breakdown;
Federal/NSW Fixing Local Roads Program – $4,600,000
Griffith City Council – $1,190,000
Grain Link / Local Farmers – $300,000
