Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill will lead the CLP Government’s first international delegation under the reinstated portfolio for Asian Relations.

The two-day delegation to Timor-Leste today and tomorrow marks the start of the CLP Government’s re-engagement with our Asian neighbours who will play a critical role in rebuilding our economy.

“We are repairing the loss of the Asian Relations portfolio eight years ago and making sure our northern neighbours know how critical they are to rebuilding the Territory economy,” she said.

“The Northern Territory delegation will meet with Timorese government representatives including the Prime Minister and Vice Prime Minister, as well as Territorians who operate businesses in Timor-Leste.

“The Northern Territory and Timor-Leste maintain a unique and close relationship based on economic, strategic, and cultural ties, and our meetings will further strengthen international relationships and progress actions under the Strategic Partnership Agreement 2023-2027.”

The agreement sets out the framework for bilateral cooperation between the two jurisdictions across several key areas including workforce, trade, investment, tourism, agriculture health, emergency preparedness, sports, art, and culture.

To date, the agreement has established pathways for increased labour mobility and skill sharing, collaboration and capacity building including crocodile management, primary education, tourism marketing, biosecurity development and emergency services cooperation.

“Supporting initiatives under these key areas reflects our shared commitment for cooperation and exchange adding to our growing bilateral relationship,” said Ms Cahill.

“It also provides opportunities and new pathways for Territory businesses to engage as the Timor-Leste economy expands.

“We are focused on reconnecting with growing economies and ensuring the Territory always has a seat at the table.”
