Tougher action needed to save lives

  • Second case of COVID-19 with unknown source
  • Lockdown best chance to avoid widespread community transmission
  • Tough public health measures will require support for workers
  • A second case of coronavirus in Tasmanian with an unknown source is a strong signal to Peter Gutwein that all non-essential services must close now in the interests of public health.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said there is no excuse for delay.

“Peter Gutwein has conceded today that there will be community transmission in Tasmania, and there will be deaths.

“With a second case overnight with an unknown source, we have to accept community transmission is likely already happening.

“Residents of Devonport and surrounds are being warned to strictly follow public health advice.

“But at the same time, the Premier is expressing frustration that people are not following advice to stay home to save lives.

“Closing all non-essential services and putting Tasmanian into full lockdown is the clear course of action.”

Ms White said tougher public health measures must come hand-in-glove with support for workers to stay home.

“Scott Morrison is talking about putting businesses into hibernation during this crisis. I hope that’s code for a wage subsidy, which would not only save jobs, but businesses too.

“Supporting businesses to keep paying workers during a temporary shutdown will give people the financial security they need to stay home and comply with tough public health measures. It will also help businesses emerge quickly after the crisis period, with workers ready to go.

“The level of job losses we’ve seen in the past week has devastated individuals, families and the economy. There is an alternative.

“Scott Morrison must act on calls from employers, peak bodies, banks and unions for a wage subsidy that will protect workers and businesses now, and as we recover from this crisis.”
