Townsville continues to prove itself as the events capital of the North as it prepares for a bumper double-header of world-class rugby union action this Saturday night.
The Queensland Reds will return to Queensland Country Bank Stadium for the second time this Super Rugby Pacific season when they do battle with rivals the NSW Waratahs, with kick-off at 7:35pm.
But the action starts earlier in the evening, with the Super W Grand final to be played between the Queensland Reds women’s team and Fijiana Drua from 4:45pm.
The Reds will face a stern test against the visiting Fijiana side, who are defending Super W champions after taking down the NSW Waratahs women’s team in the 2022 grand final.
Mayor Jenny Hill was thrilled to see the Reds back in town and threw her support behind the Queensland Reds women’s team as they look to cap their stellar Super W season with a premiership win.
“Our city continues to attract amazing sporting events to Queensland Country Bank Stadium and this weekend’s double-header is another prime example of that,” Cr Hill said.
“I can’t wait to see our city get behind the Reds in the men’s and women’s games and hopefully cheer them home to big wins.
“We already have tasted grand final success with the Townsville Fire storming to the WNBL title earlier this year so to see the Reds women’s team take out the grand final in Townsville would be incredible.”
The action won’t be limited to on the field this Saturday as Council will put on a special Townsville Eats: Queensland Reds edition where fans can enjoy something to eat from dozens of food trucks on Flinders Street East before walking to the stadium for the big game.
There will be dozens of different food trucks covering a wide range of cuisines and catering for members of the community with different dietary requirements.
There will also be live music from talented local musicians as well as kids’ attractions, free face painting and roving entertainers at this family friendly and accessible event that everyone in the Townsville community can enjoy.
This double-header continues a stellar year of live sport in Townsville, which has already included the Townsville Fire’s run to a WNBL title, multiple Cowboys games and will also see Game 2 of the NRLW State of Origin series played at Queensland Country Bank Stadium on Thursday 22 June.
Over the past 12 months Council has delivered over 60 inclusive events for community, including events like the seniors’ lunches, Anzac Day, NAFA, Carols by Candlelight and Townsville Eats, while working to attract a range of additional events for Townsville residents.
