Traffic campaign – West Arnhem

Northern Territory Police have seized a quantity of drugs and alcohol in the West Arnhem region.

On Friday 12 June, Jabiru police officers conducted random breath tests (RBT) along the Arnhem Highway.

During the RBT, police seized and destroyed 80 litres of alcohol and located 110 grams of cannabis which were destined for remote Aboriginal communities.

Fifteen liquor infringements, six traffic infringements and four drug infringements were issued.

Three people were issued with notices to appear in court at a later date. That included a learner driver who was detected travelling at 40km/h above the 80km/h speed limit.

He was issued a notice to appear for:

  • learner driver – nil person in front seat
  • exceed speed 31-45km/h.

The following evening on Saturday 13 June, police conducted patrols of the region and destroyed six litres of alcohol destined for remote Aboriginal communities.

Two liquor infringement notices were issued.

A 29-year-old man tested positive for alcohol during a random breath test and was arrested for the purpose of breath analysis. At the station he was found to be unlicensed, and returned a positive reading of 0.047.

The man was charged with:

  • unlicensed driver with alcohol in blood
  • breach of order suspending sentence
  • drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed
  • drive unregistered motor vehicle
  • drive uninsured motor vehicle.
