Trio arrested after aggravated burglary in Ballarat overnight

Police have arrested three youths following an aggravated burglary and collision in Ballarat this morning.

Investigators have been told a Red Range Rover SUV was allegedly stolen from a Talbot street property about 2am this morning.

The Range Rover SUV and several other items were stolen during the aggravated burglary.

The occupants, two men and a woman who were home at the time were not injured and were not aware the burglary had occurred until they woke at 1.45am and discovered the vehicle gone.

Police patrolling the Wendouree area sighted the vehicle at a local service station on Learmonth Road about 2.12am.

One of the occupants of the vehicle, a 14-year-old Ballarat East teenage boy was arrested by police at the scene and the remaining two offenders fled in the vehicle.

Police were transporting the alleged offender back to the station when the stolen vehicle allegedly drove at police however the police vehicle was not struck.

The police van continued to drive down Sturt Street and the SUV returned and allegedly drove directly at police on the wrong side of the road, causing the driver of the police vehicle to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

The stolen vehicle continued driving and was unable to be located by police at that time.

The SUV was then spotted at the intersection of Urqhart Street and Ascot Street South about 7.35am by the victim’s son.

He called Triple 0 and followed the vehicle for a short distance before the female passenger, a 16-year-old from Ballarat East got out of the vehicle and the victim performed a citizen’s arrest.

The girl was held until police arrived.

The male driver fled in the vehicle and crashed into a fence of a property at the nearby intersection of Dawson and Mair Street about 8.20am.

He fled on foot and was subsequently arrested by a member of the community in Lyons Street and held until police arrived a short time later.

The 15-year-old boy from Ballarat was arrested and all three teens are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

No-one was injured during the incident and the investigation remains ongoing.
