Wyndham City has received approval from the Department of Transport and Planning to implement a truck ban on Thames Boulevard.
Trucks that have a local purpose to use the boulevard such as for deliveries to local properties, rubbish collections, road maintenance and emergency services will be able to still access the boulevard legally.
The ban follows concerns raised by residents that a high number of trucks were using the boulevard as a ‘rat run’ to avoid main roads in the area.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre, congratulated all those who worked successfully to gain support for the ban.
“The community approached us about truck ban for Thames Boulevard,” she said.
“Council followed up with an investigation of truck volumes, the collected data showed that a higher than expected number of commercial vehicles (trucks) were travelling on the road.”
“Council also spoke to residential groups to gauge their support of the ban, which was generally favourable.”
“This information was then presented to the Department of Transport and Planning to support a ban.”
“This is a win for our community – as we will soon reduce truck noise, dust and concerns about such large vehicles using residential streets and causing a safety risk in Thames Boulevard,” she said.
“We will be installing signage to implement the truck ban over the coming week or two. As soon as the signage is installed then the truck ban will commence. We will also install temporary electronic signage to advise drivers of the new truck ban.”
“Our next steps are to undertake traffic studies in Thames Boulevard to investigate resident concerns regarding speeding.”
