Two dead after train derailment in Wallan

Victoria Police are investigating following a train derailment in Wallan this evening.

It is believed the train travelling from Sydney to Melbourne derailed near the Hume Freeway just before 8pm.

The male driver and another person, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Twelve others were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A report for the Coroner will be prepared.

Police will investigate the cause of the incident in conjunction with National Rail Safety Regulator, Australian Transport Safety Bureau, and Work Safe.

Police are appealing for anyone who was onboard the train and did not make contact with emergency services or who had a booking but did not travel to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
