Two speedsters make same mistake

A Moorabbin Highway Patrol unit detected two speedsters within hours of each other in the early hours of Saturday.

In the first instance, a 25-year-old man was detected travelling at an alleged speed of 132km/h in an 80km/h zone on Westall Street Clayton South about 1am this morning.

The Springvale man’s drivers’ licence will be suspended for 12 months.

Just over an hour later, the same Moorabbin Highway Patrol unit detected a vehicle on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Patterson Lakes allegedly travelling at 142km/h in a 100km/h zone.

The 21-year-old driver from Glen Waverley allegedly returned an evidentiary breath test reading of .145.

His license was suspended immediately and he received two penalty notices: one for speeding and the other for drink-driving.

The two incidents form part of Operation Compass, a road policing operation aimed at keeping the community safe on Victorian roads.

Police continue to use an intelligence-based approach to target locations and major arterials law-breaking drivers are expected to be, as people from metro Melbourne head to regional Victoria.

This includes behaviour such as speeding, drink and drug driving, people not wearing seatbelts, mobile phone use and fatigue.

As a part of Operation Compass enhanced police enforcement will take place from until 11.59pm on Sunday 29 November.
