Two to face court after pursuit, crash into house at Lake Illawarra, NSW

A woman and man will face court charged after a pursuit yesterday in the Lake Illawarra region.

About 2.55pm (Saturday 17 April 2021), officers from Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol initiated a pursuit with a stolen 2003 Subaru WRX station wagon after it failed to stop in Barrack Heights.

The pursuit reached speeds of 140km/h in a 50km/h which was terminated by police due to safety concerns.

A short time later the Subaru crashed into a house on Blackbutt Way, causing minor damage to a brick wall.

The driver, a 39-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene. The passenger, a 43-year-old man, was also arrested. Both were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

The woman was then subjected to a drug test which allegedly returned a positive result. A secondary test also allegedly returned a positive result to cannabis and methylamphetamine.

Subsequent checks revealed the woman was disqualified from holding a drivers license.

The woman was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, and possess prohibited drug.

The Warilla woman was refused bail and will appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Sunday 18 April 2021).

The man was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, and possess prohibited drug.

The Barrack Heights man was granted conditional bail to appear at Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday 26 May 2021.
