9 August 2022, New York, USA (Virtual) – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) office in New York concluded its summer 2022 collaboration with the Harbour Education (Beijing) on Sunday August 7, 2022. This online training series marked the fourth successful endowment of the Harbour – UNITAR global competency training programme – a training programme equipped with curriculums centered around knowledge sharing and skill development, for students who desire to work in the international organizations post college graduation.

The summer 2022 training programme consisted with two consecutive one-week cohorts from the last week of July, to the first week of August 2022. The total beneficiaries were 250 people. The Head of Office of UNITAR New York, Mr. Marco Suazo, together with the Director of CIFAL Shanghai, Mr. Genxiang Wang, delivered the opening remarks and the keynote speech for the first cohort of the participants. Mr. Suazo introduced the history, responsibilities, and the mission of UNITAR New York. As the dedicated training arm of the United Nations, in addition to training young diplomats, UNITAR also values the importance of cultivating tomorrow’s decision makers by actively adapting its knowledge and resources to the needs of students, and expanding its partnerships with higher education institutions. Mr. Suazo’s opening remark echoed with Mr. Genxiang Wang’s keynote speech on behalf of CIFAL Shanghai. CIFAL Shanghai believes that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serves as a crucial guide for industries in the decision-making process. More importantly, CIFAL Shanghai has been actively educating the public on SDGs through its educational programmes, and encouraging students to incorporate the SDGs into their daily life through its engagements with numerous Chinese universities.

Both the first and the second cohorts began with the webinar ‘becoming an international civil servant’ designed by and delivered by Dr. Rebecca E. Webber Gaudiosi, a scientist turned diplomat, earned B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Northwestern University and a Science and Technology Policy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Ms. Jimena Leiva-Roesch, who represented the voice of the developing world in multiple negotiations at the UN and offered hands-on training on diplomacy and leadership in academic institutions around the world.

Mr. Sandy Singer, a Lecturer and Instructor in the UN-LCP English Language Programme and Consultant and Professor in the field of Written and Oral Communication for Business returned as the instructor for the webinar titled ‘public speaking and presentation skills.’ Mr. Singer highlighted the main components and concerns of presenting, he also went into details about special considerations when presenting in the United Nations.

Another returning instructor is Dr. Angel Angelov with his webinar titled ‘working as a diplomat.’ Dr. Angelov is a diplomat and a scholar. He talked about the level of education, language, level of experience and competencies required to become a diplomat. His experience inspired a lot of the students to pursue a career as a diplomat, and he remained online overtime to answer students’ questions related to their major, their career path, and their confusions about job applications.
