University of Newcastle has affirmed its position as a world leading university, climbing a further five places to rank 192 in the world in the QS World University Rankings.

The Top 200 result continues the University’s strong year-on-year improvement in these rankings since 2014.

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said maintaining the University’s position as a top 200 University demonstrated the continued commitment to excellence.

“In just under 10 years we have climbed more than 100 places in our world ranking, despite fierce global competition,” Professor Zelinsky said.

“This ongoing improvement is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our staff and our absolute commitment to being a world-leading university for our regions.

“These results are confirmation of our unwavering focus on providing our students with an exceptional education and experience and leading critical research breakthroughs.

“The world-class education we provide is part of what sets our University apart and sees nearly 90% of our undergraduates find employment within four months of graduating,” * Professor Zelinsky said.

The QS World Rankings review data from over 1400 universities, amalgamated into a quick-reference single ranking. University rankings provide a standardised global measure for staff, students and researchers to compare universities and support their decision-making.

Suzzwal Shrestha, a B Software Engineering student, explained how the rankings helped him to decide which university to attend.

“As an international student looking to study overseas, rankings were one of the most important factors that I looked at when choosing a university.

“When I saw it was a top university in Australia and a top 200 in the world it definitely swayed me to the university given it was a more affordable place than Sydney and has a great environment for international students.

“I believe having a top 200 university in my CV will be a differentiating factor for any employer deciding among candidates. Given the rigor and quality of courses in the University, I think this will improve my employment prospects once I graduate,” Mr Shrestha said.

The announcement also comes weeks after the University was named as a partner for the Federal Government’s Clean Energy and Recycling Trailblazer Universities Program.

“We’re committed to being a leader in sustainability at our University and this has filtered through from embedding sustainability at the core of our research and teaching to our commitment to be carbon neutral by 2025.

“The announcement of the Trailblazer Program comes as we enter an exciting period that will see us working more closely with industry to become a real driving force in developing and implementing greener technologies around the world.

“It is the quality of our research and a focus on solving the world’s greatest challenges that help us to become global leaders,” said Professor Zelinsky.

In the QS World Rankings, institutions are ranked according to six key metrics that indicate the reputation of the University of Newcastle with academics and employers around the world, the impact and global reach of research outcomes, and the quality of the student experience.
