The Morrison Government is pleased to announce the finalisation of the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards 2020 which have been released today.
The Premises Standards is one of three standards established under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) to provide people with disability dignified and equitable access to buildings.
It also provides the construction industry with clarity and certainty that they will not discriminate under the DDA, or any other state or territory disability regime, if the requirements are met.
The revised standards apply to new construction projects, or major renovations of existing commercial buildings.
They reflect updates to the National Construction Code 2019 and introduce a requirement to include Accessible Adult Change Facilities in certain classes of buildings.
This new requirement will provide people with complex disability needs greater access to public buildings, enhancing quality of life and social participation.
The amendments contained in the 2020 Standards align with Australia’s international obligations with respect to promoting dignity, equality and independence for people with disabilities under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
