Upgrade to deliver world-standard athletics facility

Arafura Stadium is set for an upgrade that will ensure its new surface is certified to world athletics standards.

Territory Labor is delivering the $2.6 million improvement to the all-weather running track as part of its commitment to providing the facilities necessary for Territory athletes to excel.

The upgrade will also ensure that Darwin is capable of hosting national and international athletics teams looking to train in warmer climates in the lead-up to major events.

The current surface was installed in 2011 and has reached the end of its useable life.

Polytan Asia Pacific Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to carry out the works.

Polytan is the longest established sports facility construction company in Australia and the only World Athletics-approved provider with Australian-based manufacturing.

Work at the stadium will start this month, with completion by October 2022.

The Government has worked closely with stakeholders and primary users of the athletics track to arrange alternative sports facilities to ensure minimal disruption to planned sports events.

The upgrade addresses safety concerns raised by users and will ensure Arafura Stadium meets the necessary certification and standard requirements.

The upgrade also supports a number of community groups to use the facility for fundraising events and festivals.

Quotes from Minister for Sport, Kate Worden:

“We want to see our sports stars shine, that’s why Territory Labor is providing the best possible facilities for our current and future champions to use.

“Arafura Stadium is a key asset in the Marrara Sporting Complex and these works will benefit the athletics and wider sporting community and provide them with a world-class facility.

“The upgrade will also bring greater opportunities to host national and international sports teams and athletes.”
