Urban artists paint town as Surface festival begins today

Over the next three days, Canberrans can see original works by 35 local and interstate artists take shape across 30 walls in Braddon, Civic and the National Triangle.

Presented by the ACT Government and curated by graffiti artist PHIBS, the event features festival tours, live music, panel discussions and exhibitions.

“Surface will support artists and businesses by encouraging Canberrans to wander through our city and shop, dine or drink local – as blank walls come alive with vivid urban artworks,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.

“Preparations have been underway over the past weeks with some colour already on display in tunnels and laneways across the City and Braddon.

“Autumn is a huge season of events in Canberra, and we encourage Canberrans to hit the streets and enjoy this new festival with family and friends. It’s free, inclusive, immersive and COVID-safe.”

As a predominantly non-ticketed event, Check In CBR QR codes will be available throughout the festival and the community is encouraged to use them.

Some events are pre-registered and there are limited places still available for those who would like to attend.

Other regions are also part of the Surface excitement, with Woden hosting street art and exhibitions and a light-rail art adventure tour from Gungahlin to Braddon.

Visitors are encouraged to move between areas by walking, cycling, scooting and using public transport where possible between 10am and 6pm.

“I’d like to thank all the artists, businesses and property owners hosting the artworks who have made this event happen. After a really tough few years for the arts and our hospitality precincts, it will be great to bounce back with a huge burst of colour this coming weekend,” said Minister Steel.

“Colours are starting to build in the areas of Braddon, there’s a definite buzz and a real sense of energy as people stop to look and engage with the artists’ work,” said festival curator and artist Tim Phibs.

“We’re making the most of this break in the weather as we continue to build momentum until the main event kicks off. Whether or not visitors have prior knowledge of the festival – Surface artworks are starting to turn heads.”

The official program is available online at www.surfacefest.com.au and hard copies can be picked up at various locations – including the Canberra Centre and the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre.
