Vasey RSL Care Disappointed by Funding Setback for Bundoora Affordable Housing Project

Despite fervent efforts, Vasey RSL Care is disappointed at not securing funding for the Bundoora Affordable Housing Project in Tuesday’s Victorian State Budget.

While understanding the complexities of the budget process and the multitude of worthy projects vying for support, Vasey RSL Care stresses the urgent need to address the critical gap in housing provision for our at-risk veterans.

Vasey RSL Care was seeking a $5 million co-contribution from the Victorian State Government towards the construction of 20 affordable rental units in Bundoora, specifically for veterans in need.

While the budget was heavy in housing and homelessness support, it was an absolute oversight to see vulnerable veterans missing out. “Veterans are often marginalised and overlooked in mainstream discussions. They deserve prioritised support and tailored interventions to address their unique challenges”, said Vasey RSL Care Chief Executive Officer Janna Voloshin.

The Bundoora Affordable Housing Project aims to assist veterans facing the looming threat of homelessness, a group almost three times more likely to experience homelessness than the general public.

Recognising the dire circumstances faced by many in the ex-service community, Vasey RSL Care had hoped for government support in tackling this pressing issue.

“Despite this setback, we remain persistent in our commitment to veterans and ensuring their needs are not ignored,” said Ms Voloshin.

The organisation firmly believes that the government must explore alternative avenues to secure funding for the Bundoora Affordable Housing Project, as it represents a critical intervention in safeguarding the well-being of our ex-service community.

Vasey RSL Care urges the government to prioritise the allocation of resources towards initiatives that support our communities most vulnerable members, emphasising the moral imperative of fulfilling our duty to those who have sacrificed for our nation’s security and well-being.
