Victims of crime in Western Australia will be better connected with Police and support services through a new Victim Notification Service (VNS) launching today.
Through this new service, victims of certain crimes will receive an automated text message from the WA Police Force, giving them immediate confirmation of their Incident Report number and contact details for follow-up.
The message will also provide links to relevant online resources, including information about safety, security and victim support services.
The service is intended to complement direct engagement between police officers and victims, providing victims with an access link to support services after an incident.
A successful trial in Midland demonstrated increased victim contact rates and improved access to support services being recorded without negative feedback.
The service will be rolled out in a phased approach, initially for victims of assault, burglary, stealing and fraud, before progressing to more serious offences.
The VNS is an example of the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to putting WA first, to ensuring community safety and investing in WA Police giving officers the resources to better support victims of crime.
