The Victorian Minister for Water, Regional Development and Equality the Hon. Harriet Shing recently visited Nagambie to view the construction of the Nagambie Foreshore Walk.
The Minister was accompanied by Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks, Cr Reg Dickinson, Council project officers, construction staff and local stakeholders to view the beginning of the works at the Nagambie Lake Regatta Centre.
The $3.8 million pathway – which stretches for 1.6km along the southern edge of Lake Nagambie – will provide a safe and accessible pedestrian link between the Nagambie Regatta Centre and the Nagambie township.
Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said it was fantastic to acknowledge the Victorian Government’s contribution to the project – a $3 million Victorian Government Regional Development Victoria Grant – which has been combined with $350,000 Federal Government grant provided in May 2019, $250,000 from Strathbogie Shire Council and $200,000 provided by Nagambie businesses.
“Without the significant funding received from the Victorian Government grant, the project would not have been possible,” Cr Binks said.
Cr Binks said the visit was another fantastic opportunity to talk to the Minister about Council’s advocacy project to bring rowing events to Lake Nagambie for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Council is advocating to the Victorian Government to first include rowing as a sport in the games and then commit to hosting it at the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre.
“Council has shown we can deliver events of this capacity by hosting the Australian Rowing Nationals. This opportunity would not simply draw international tourists to our region, it would enhance social, economic, and environmental outcomes across North East Victoria, which has so far missed out in the Regional Games.”
