Victorian cowboy Sam Woodall wins on home-state dirt as PBR makes triumphant Melbourne return
The dirt flew, the bulls bucked and a Victorian cowboy brought the John Cain Arena house down as PBR Australia made a triumphant bucking return to Melbourne in front of a SOLD-OUT crowd last night.
Heywood’s Sam Woodall claimed the Monster Energy Melbourne Invitational title, producing the performance of the night to win on home-state dirt and collect $10,400 in prizemoney and 246 PBR Australia points.
Woodall opened his Melbourne campaign with an 82.50-point ride aboard Dunne Bulls’ Jackie Red, before backing it up with an 84.90-point effort on MSG Locating Filthy Rich from Lazy G Bucking Bulls.
The win was particularly sweet for the Victorian, coming as PBR Australia returned to Melbourne for the first time since 2019, and bull riding fans responded by packing the arena.
Woodall’s Melbourne victory also delivered a major shake-up to the national title race, propelling him into fifth place in the 2026 PBR Australia National Standings with 887 points.
Queensland’s Zane Hall, from Athol, finished runner-up and pocketed $9,400 after producing one of the rides of the night, an enormous 88-point effort aboard Ariat Last Strike in Round 1.
New Zealand cowboy Rylee Ward finished third, while another Victorian gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about when Maldon’s Toby Collins covered Aussie Gangster for 85.20 points in Round 2. Mount Isa’s Donnie Rutherfurd also fired with an 86.40-point ride aboard Spartan.
While the cowboys had the packed Melbourne crowd on its feet, the bovine athletes were equally determined to own the arena. Dunne Bulls’ Last Post was the highest-marked bull of the event at 43.80 points, while one of the most feared bulls on the Australian circuit, Alpha Blokes Warden, posted a 43.40-point bull score and needed just two seconds to dispatch NSW cowboy Charlie Bailey.
At the top of the championship table, reigning Australian Champion Kurt Shephard continues to set the benchmark. The Mareeba cowboy remains the clear national leader with 1,969 points, ahead of Brazil’s Keny Roger de Oliveira on 1,462.50 and Zane Hall on 1,396. Ethan Coster sits fourth on 894, with Woodall’s Melbourne victory lifting him to fifth.
For Woodall, however, Saturday night belonged to Victoria, a home-state victory in front of a sold-out Melbourne crowd and another statement that he is right in the fight as the 2026 season heads towards its business end.
