Villa McAuley locks in 2022 fitness classes thanks to Council grant

Residents at Villa McAuley are going to get moving in 2022 thanks to a grant of more than $6,500 which will go towards fitness classes from Townsville City Council.

The grant to cover part of the cost for an exercise physiologist at the retirement village was approved at today’s council meeting.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said the grants would help improve the general wellbeing of people living at Villa McAuley.

“Villa McAuley will deliver a full calendar years’ worth of fitness classes at the village to help residents improve their mobility and their wellbeing,” Cr Greaney said.

“The grant has been awarded to help fund an exercise physiologist to run the fitness classes at the Villa in 2022. The village also has a buggy that will help residents get to and from classes, making it more accessible to all people living at Villa McAuley.”

Cr Greaney said the fitness classes would also have a positive impact on the mental health of participants.

“It’s well known that moving the body can benefit the mind, and as such it’s important to make sure residents at retirement villages have the option to get active regularly for both their physical and mental health,” she said.

“These classes won’t just be about getting fit, they’ll also be a wonderful chance to socialise with likeminded people on a regular basis.

“This grant from Council will help ensure that the option for safe, guided workouts is available to residents who want to participate.”
