WA to play host to major submarine conference

  • Experts to gather in Fremantle to discuss future of submarine industry
  • 400 delegates expected to attend
  • Speakers to explore submarine science, technology and engineering
  • Government and defence agencies, academics, the maritime and subsea industry, and research organisations will gather in Fremantle later this year for the 5th Submarine Science, Technology and Engineering Conference 2019 – SubSTEC5.

Launched today by Defence Issues Minister Paul Papalia, the conference theme is ‘Innovation and Investment in the Subsea Environment’, with a focus on the development of the forthcoming Attack class submarines and the current Collins class submarines.

Western Australia was chosen as the conference location given Perth is already home to a significant Defence Force presence, and plans are underway to develop and promote a comprehensive case for the State to be the principal location for the maintenance and sustainment of all submarines and frigates.

There will be a range of speakers at the conference who will explore topics including subsea, offshore science, technology and engineering, engineering design, emerging and disruptive submarine technologies, workforce skills development and translational research and IP protection.

Presented by the Submarine Institute of Australia and proudly supported by the State Government through Defence West, SubSTEC5 is expected to attract up to 400 delegates at the Esplanade Hotel from November 18 to 21, 2019.
