Walking and talking for mental health

CFA people will walk alongside fellow emergency services personnel, defence force personnel and the community to raise awareness and funds for Walking Off The War Within at events in Ballarat, Warrnambool and Mildura.

Walking and talking for mental health

Walking Off The War Within (WOTWW) is held each year to raise awareness of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder as well as honour the memory of CFA firefighter and returned solider Nathan Shanahan, a fierce advocate of ending the stigma associated with mental health.

WOTWW aims to honour the movement that Nathan started, bringing together people to talk about mental health.

Members are invited to join events in Ballarat, Mildura and Warrnambool to walk as one in recognition of all service men and women who have battled mental health issues.

Participants can walk 1, 2, 3 or more kilometres or complete the ultimate challenge – a 20-kilometre walk carrying 20 kilograms.

CFA’s Wellbeing team, including peer support members, will be available at all three events. The team will also host a chill-out zone at Ballarat.

In addition to the walk, the event includes family and children’s activities, community education displays, face painting and jumping castles.

Thousands of people from across Australia are expected to take part to let others know they are not alone.
