War medals found from 77 years ago

Police are appealing for information to find the family of a war veteran, after his medals were found by a retired Homicide Detective in Warrandyte.

The original set of World War 2 service medals were hidden in an old piece of wooden furniture which was bought at a garage sale a decade or more ago around the Doncaster area.

They were discovered by a retired Homicide Detective who worked for Victoria Police for over 30 years and were handed in to Warrandyte Police Station on 3 May 2022.

It’s believed the medals belong to David Bruce Welsford who was born in August, 1924.

The set includes the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-1945.

It is understood David lived all of his life in the eastern and north east suburbs, with his last known address being in Doncaster.

He passed away in 2001 and his wife, Lorrie Welsford, passed away in 1999.

It is believed they did not have children but Lorrie may have had children from a previous marriage.

Police continue to make enquiries to track down any of David’s family so the medals can be passed onto his loved ones.

Police have issued photos of the medals and urge anyone who knew David or has more information to contact Warrandyte Police Station on (03) 9844 3231.
