Waste safety in Townsville residents’ hands

What do white goods, air conditioners, batteries, gas bottles and motor oil have in common? They’re all free to drop off at Townsville’s waste transfer stations.

Water and Resource Recovery Committee chairperson Russ Cook said adding items like batteries, gas bottles and motor oil to household bins was dangerous, as they combust.

“Safety is paramount for Council and the community, which is why we’re reminding residents to never throw batteries, gas bottles, camping stoves and cannisters, marine flares and chemicals or motor oil into their residential bins. They can cause fires in our waste trucks and facilities, which puts our staff and the public at risk,” Cr Cook said.

“Recently, we have had multiple flare-ups each week across our waste facilities which are extinguished by staff members. Some of these flare-ups turn into fires that are so significant that we require emergency services to attend, which is extremely concerning. These fires are typically caused by batteries, marine flares, or chemicals.

“You can dispose of these items for free by taking them straight to your nearest waste transfer station.

“Council is also an accredited B-cycle battery steward, with drop-off points available for lithium batteries at all Citylibraries Townsville locations as well as the Stuart and Hervey Range Waste Transfer Stations, many shopping centres, supermarkets and various other retailers.

“If you’re unsure of whether something can go into your household bins, jump onto the What Goes In Your Bin page on Council’s website to double check.

“Every waste truck driver and facility staff member deserves to have a safe workplace every day. By doing your part you’ll help keep our staff safe and prevent delays in bin collections.”

Cr Cook said green waste was also free to dispose of all year for residential properties.

“Green waste can be dropped off at Council’s waste transfer stations for free right through the year to then be mulched and repurposed,” he said.

“Domestic green waste disposal is unlimited at all of our waste transfer stations all year round for residents across Townsville.”
