Western Victoria Transmission Network Project

What is the project?

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has appointed Ausnet/Mondo to construct and operate a new, approximately 190-kilometre overhead electricity transmission line between Bulgana in Victoria’s west and Sydenham in Melbourne’s north-west. A new terminal station will also be constructed to the north of Ballarat. The route of the transmission line has not yet been determined.

City of Ballarat is very supportive of renewable energy projects in this region and investment in new infrastructure to get this power into the National Electricity Market is critically important. As a project, a new transmission network connection from the Grampians into Melbourne has many potential benefits for this region. However, the process to determine a route and clarify technology and design of any transmission line (including underground cable options) need to be explored in an open, transparent and consultative manner. Engagement with local communities must be best practice.

Is City of Ballarat advocating on behalf of residents?

Yes – City of Ballarat is working closely with our neighboring shires of Hepburn Shire Council, Moorabool Shire Council, City of Melton, Pyrenees Shire and Northern Grampians Shire, and is strongly advocating on behalf of our community.

Specifically, we are seeking changes to the consultation program to better engage with residents and provide more transparency. We are also advocating for Ausnet to undertake a full assessment to determine the route of least impact including consideration of undergrounding of the powerlines.

Who do I contact to have my say?

City of Ballarat is receiving calls from residents seeking to influence the outcome of the project. What we will continue to do is to strongly voice the concerns of residents to Ausnet/Mondo about the process and seek to get the very best outcome for our communities. The angst for many is recognised and understood.

Who will approve the project?

City of Ballarat does not have any role in determining the route, preparing or considering the proposal or approving the project. This is a privately delivered project with approvals to be considered by the Victorian Government. As such, the best way to be heard is to make contact with the company directly via www.westvictnp.com.au or by calling
