Wet weather impacting Lake Mac roads

Recent heavy rains have damaged road surfaces and infrastructure, leading to changed conditions along roads in the Lake Macquarie suburbs of Cooranbong, Dudley and Wangi Wangi.

The speed limit at Deaves Road at Cooranbong will be reduced from today, Thursday 14 April, to improve safety for motorists.

The usual speed limit of 80km/h will be reduced to 60km/h along a significant stretch of the road, with a 40km/h speed limit introduced at some sections where the road has deteriorated significantly due to the recent wet weather.

Council’s Asset Manager Helen Plummer said the temporary speed limit reduction was being introduced to make sure the road is safe.

“Speed limits need to be suitable for the individual road environment,” Ms Plummer said.

“Unfortunately, the ongoing wet weather has deteriorated the road surface to a point where some sections are becoming difficult for motorists to navigate at the current speed.

“The temporary speed limit reduction will make the road safer for motorists until we can carry out heavy patching, potholing and other rehabilitation works to improve the surface condition of the road.

“We are also in the process of reviewing our current works program to determine when we can undertake more substantive road rehabilitation works along Deaves Road.”

Motorists driving in the area are asked to slow down and adhere to the new speed limits in place.

Minor landslips have also affected the roadway at Goulburn Street, Dudley, and Beach Road, Wangi Wangi.

Pedestrian access to the beach from Goulburn Street at Dudley has been closed, while detours are in place at Lake View Road and Dobell Drive for residents of Beach Road, Wangi Wangi.

Beachgoers are urged to use the Dudley Beach car park access while closures are in place.

Council staff will undertake geotechnical investigations as a first step to designing permanent repairs to the affected roads.
