What’s in name? Balmoral moves closer to decision

Unless you’re from around here, the place name ‘Balmoral’ is likely to bring to mind Sydney’s Balmoral Beach. This confusion has frequently led to our Balmoral Village locals experiencing frustration with lost deliveries and service issues. Community consultation has led to a Notice of Proposal to the Geographical Names Board being presented at the June 21 Ordinary Meeting of Council.

Some residents with a Buxton address have also indicated that they would prefer to have a Balmoral Village locality formally defined. We distributed information kits to every property owner and resident prior to undertaking the survey, so that all community members could make an informed contribution to decision making in this matter.

“The outcomes of this survey showed majority support for formally changing the name of this locality to Balmoral Village,” says

Long time resident of Balmoral, Rae-Anne Lingwood said “We really appreciate the support of the Council in this matter. Our village has been pushing for a name change for many years, and the villagers are so thankful for this council team’s involvement and hard work in pushing this along'”.

In line with what the community wanted, Council moved to submit a proposal to the Geographical Names Board during the council meeting on 20 July 2022.

Residents are encouraged to view the submission, lodged on the Geographical Names Board website at www.gnb.nsw.gov.au, from 21 June to 21 July 2023. Written submissions may be submitted to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
