The season of giving is upon us, and Byron Shire Council is again playing its part and offering extra wheelie bin collections this year.
For two weeks, from Monday 25 December to Friday 5 January, all wheelie bins will be collected.
This includes red, yellow and green bins for urban households and red and yellow bins for rural households.
Normally the emptying of red and yellow bins alternates on a weekly basis, but because there is a lot of additional waste and material for recycling during the Christmas-New Year period, Council offers additional collection services.
“We know that household waste increases by about 30 percent in the two weeks over Christmas, and over-flowing bins create a range of problems, including the potential for additional pollution of streets and waterways,” Sarah Child, from Council’s Resource and Recovery team, said.
“We have been offering this extra service for five years now, and it is well-received by our residents, and has reduced the amount of litter spilling onto streets,” she said.
People are asked to put their bins out the night before their normal collection day and make sure the lid is closed.
Bins should be brought in as soon as they are emptied to reduce congestion on the street.
“The Christmas period creates a lot of waste that goes to landfill, like tinsel, bon bons, most wrapping paper and food package,” Ms Child said.
“If we can rethink what we buy and use what we already have we can reduce waste and save a little money,” she said.

The Byron Resource Recovery Centre will be closed on public holidays over the Christmas-New Year period.
