Where does Guy Barnett stand on fishing restrictions?

  • Train wreck interview exposes divisions
  • Barnett privately back lifting of rec fishing restrictions
  • Rules are inconsistent
  • Guy Barnett’s train wreck radio interview this morning hints at deep divisions in the Liberal ranks over recreational fishing restrictions.

The Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Shane Broad said the Minister responsible for fisheries was asked multiple times whether he personally agreed with the restrictions preventing people from launching boats outside their municipal area.

“Guy Barnett tied himself up in knots” Dr Broad said.

“Labor understands that Mr Barnett has been arguing internally for a softening of restrictions, but has been rolled by Peter Gutwein.

“It is well known that Mr Barnett did not support Mr Gutwein in the leadership contest earlier this year and now the Premier is refusing to throw him a line as anger in the recreational fishing community grows.

“Minister Barnett failed to explain why it’s fine to pack the car with golf clubs to play a round or two of golf wherever you want but you can’t launch a boat to go fishing outside your Council area.

“The public health advice needs to be consistent – not selectively applied to different groups.

“If Guy Barnett really supports recreational fishers, he should publicly back their calls for a lifting of restrictions to allow for boat fishing day trips.”
