Will Hodgman failing to address critical ongoing issues at TasTAFE

  • Will Hodgman failing TasTAFE students and teachers
  • Government ignoring critical ongoing issues
  • Will Hodgman fails to stand up for our training sector
  • The Hodgman Minority Government is failing young Tasmanians by refusing to address critical ongoing issues at TasTAFE.

Shadow TAFE, University and Skills Minister, Michelle O’Byrne, said TasTAFE had been plagued by course cancellations and delays, chronic staff shortages and inadequate infrastructure for far too long.

“Labor is repeatedly being contacted by concerned students and TasTAFE staff about the serious impacts of course cancellations and delays in a number of fields including information technology, plumbing and electrotechnology,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“These cancellations and delays are having a critical impact on the careers of young Tasmanians and are also placing them at a financial disadvantage.

“We are also hearing from teachers who are under extreme pressure working long hours due to chronic staff shortages.

“Will Hodgman has never believed in TAFE and he never will.

“The Minority Liberal Government has broken our TAFE system with more than 2000 apprenticeships lost while Will Hodgman has been Premier.

“Labor has given him the opportunity to work with us to offer free TAFE courses in key sectors such as disability and aged care, building and construction, and tourism – but Will Hodgman has failed to stand up for our training sector.

“It’s clear that staff and students have no confidence that the Government will properly invest in TAFE and fix these ongoing issues.”
