Tasmania’s major events are continuing to deliver strong outcomes for the State’s economy, with Dark Mofo once again drawing tens of thousands of visitors, filling accommodation and supporting local businesses.
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Roger Jaensch, said Dark Mofo showcased Tasmania as Australia’s leading winter destination, with more than 550,000 attendances across all ticketed and free events.
“Dark Mofo has once again delivered an extraordinary result for Tasmania’s visitor economy, with world-class music, art, performances, food experiences and public installations bringing Hobart to life throughout winter,” Minister Jaensch said.
“Across the festival there were more than 100,000 tickets issued, with world-class music, art, performances, food experiences and public installations bringing Hobart to life throughout winter.
“This year 60 per cent of online ticket sales were purchased by interstate and international visitors, showing the strong drawcard this event has well beyond our shores.”
The festival achieved a box office record of $5.18 million, surpassing the previous high set in 2023, while Hobart Airport, DarkLab and airline partners helped deliver a record 108,312 airline seats across the two festival weekends.
Dark Mofo is part of a broader calendar of winter events that are encouraging visitors to explore every corner of Tasmania.
“Festivals such as the Island Escape Winter Festival and the Festival of Voices are attracting visitors to our regions, extending stays and creating reasons to travel during the cooler months,” Minister Jaensch said.
“Today also marks the beginning of Bicheno Beams, a family-friendly celebration of light, which adds another reason for visitors to experience Tasmania during winter.
“As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are investing in events that drive visitation, help keep our economy strong and support the one in six Tasmanians employed in the tourism and hospitality industry.”
