Today’s announcement that Liberty Bell Bay will be placed into liquidation is devastating for the more than 200 workers, contractors, critical supply chains, their families and our northern communities.
Federal Labor remains at the table trying to help broker a sale and preserve a future for the site. Tasmanian Labor will continue pushing for every option to be pursued.
Local contractors have now been told unsecured creditors should expect to receive nothing, or could wait up to 12 months for any possible return.
These are the businesses that kept the site running, paid wages and supported the Northern economy. Now they’re being left with massive unpaid debts, while families face financial pressure, sleepless nights and enormous uncertainty.
The Government’s failure to bring on enough new energy has left Tasmania’s existing industries competing with new projects for limited power.
Only this Government could own the power company and still fail to secure a power deal.
That failure has now cost Liberty workers their jobs. It can’t now be allowed to put more than 500 jobs at Bell Bay Aluminium at risk.
Premier Rockliff has openly admitted he thinks he can make more money selling Tasmania’s power to AI data centres to prop up his broken budget.
Pressure must be put on the Premier to do all that he can to help secure a buyer for the Liberty site and urgently deliver the long-term power agreement Bell Bay Aluminium needs.
