Two international competitions – the 2019 Judo Oceania Open for seniors and Oceania Cup for juniors/cadets – will be held in succession at the Gold Netball Centre in Jolimont from November 2-4.
The championships, hosted by Judo WA and Judo Australia, will feature some of the top ‘judokas’ – practitioners of judo – from Australia and around the world.
The events will enable competitors to gain points towards selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The events are being staged at the VenuesWest-managed Gold Netball Centre with the help of funding from the State Government.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
“The staging of the Oceania Open and Oceania Cup is set to be the largest judo event ever be held in Australia – even bigger than the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
“This is a very important event for Tokyo 2020 hopefuls, with competitors able to gain points towards selection for the Games.
“There will also be an opportunity for local Judo WA referees, table officials and other volunteers to be involved and gain valuable experience and knowledge.”
As stated by Tourism and Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister Paul Papalia:
“As well as boosting the profile of judo, there will be an economic boost for WA. It’s estimated there will be approximately 2,000 accommodation nights in Perth over the duration of the event, generating an economic benefit of more than $200,000.
“The international competition reflects the cultural diversity of our State and provides an opportunity for WA’s cultural and linguistically diverse communities come and watch, and cheer, for competitors from across the world.”
