The Tech Standards Knowledge Program responded to a growing strategic need to ensure Australian technical experts have the right skills to advance Australia’s interest. It focussed on building the complementary geopolitical, cultural competency and negotiation skills they need when setting standards in international forums.
International standards shape how emerging technologies are developed, adopted and traded globally.
By strengthening Australian experts’ capability to engage in these forums, the program has helped Australia contribute to standards that support trusted technology, economic resilience and international competitiveness.
We’ve summarised some of the program highlights below.
We’ll continue to build on the foundations we’ve established through the program, and work with stakeholders to strengthen Australia’s role in shaping international standards.
Tech Standards Training Program
More than 200 participants from across industry, academia and civil society took part in the Tech Standards Training Program. We ran 26 training workshops across the 3 capability streams.
Participants found the training extremely valuable, giving them a new perspective on how to engage during international standards committees.
Standards Australia and the IEEE Standards Association supported the program and 3 training providers designed and delivered the courses:
- Australian National University – The Geopolitics of International Standards
- Beasley Intercultural – Cultural Intelligence
- Negotiation Partners – Advanced Negotiation for Standards Committees.
Tech Standards Security Clearance Program
We also delivered a Tech Standards Security Clearance Program. This involved sponsoring and funding government security clearances for Australian experts working on setting international critical technology standards.
This element promoted greater engagement and information sharing between industry and government.
