Wyndham welcomes new citizens

Wyndham City will be celebrating Australian Citizenship Day this weekend with six ceremonies that will welcome 1,080 people as new citizens.

Australian Citizenship Day, honoured on 17 September, is a chance for all Australians to celebrate our democratic values and take pride in our Australian citizenship.

There will be three ceremonies with 180 conferees in attendance at each event on 17 September and another three ceremonies attended by 180 conferees at each, will be held on 18 September.

The conferees, who now call Australia home, are representative of 63 countries.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Peter Maynard said that over the term of this mayoral year which concludes in November, he will have conferred citizenship to 4180 residents.

“Citizenship ceremonies are a joyous event that signifies a milestone in people’s lives,” he said.

“Australian citizenship is a shared identity – a common bond which unites all Australians while respecting our diversity, we have much to be thankful for as Australians and much to share.”

“In Wyndham we welcome new residents and celebrate our diversity. In 2021 nearly half of our residents were born overseas (48 per cent), more than the Western Melbourne average and the Greater Melbourne average.”

A minute’s silence will be observed at the ceremonies to commemorate the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
