Cardinia Shire Council welcomes $55,000 in funding from VicHealth for a project to help connect young people with local farming jobs.
The project – Futureproofing Farming in Cardinia Shire – aims to:
- increase employment and education pathways for young people in the agricultural sector, with a focus on creating a local food system that is both resilient and sustainable
- support local young people to become the skilled workforce needed to lead this transition and growth
- showcase exciting opportunities in technology, business and employment emerging in the agricultural sector
Several schools and industry representatives will be involved in developing the project, alongside local young people.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Tammy Radford said Council welcomed funding for the project.
“We’re excited about hearing ideas from young people on how best to futureproof farming in Cardinia Shire”, Mayor Radford said.
“We welcome this initiative to create more job pathways and involve young people in shaping the future of our local food system”.
Futureproofing Farming in Cardinia Shire is aligned with Council’s Liveability Plan objective of increasing the sustainability and resilience of the local food system, and Council’s Community Food Strategy, which identifies the need to grow a vibrant local food economy.
This project will be delivered over three years, with funding received through the VicHealth Local Government Partnership program.
