Selection Criteria

The Citizen of the Year Awards gives the opportunity to recognise someone who makes a difference in their community across 4 categories:

  • Citizen of the Year Award
  • Young Citizen of the Year Award
  • Community Event of the Year Award
  • Award for Active Citizenship

The Citizen of the Year Awards reward and recognise organisations and individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year, and/or given an outstanding service over a number of years, to a local community over and above normal employment duties.

Outstanding contribution and community service includes areas such as education, health, fund-raising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of a community.

In your nomination:

  • Please outline how this person, organisation or event has made an outstanding contribution to the Burnside community and why you think they are deserving of an Australia Day Award.
  • You may also provide a maximum of three supporting documents you feel will assist the judges in making their decision. This can include items such as personal references, photographs, samples of work, portfolios or articles. Please do not supply originals as Council will retain all supporting documentation.

How to nominate

To nominate a person, organisation or event, please use one of the following options:

  • submit an online form
  • download, print and complete a nomination form
  • collect a form from Customer Service Desk, Library or the Community Centre Reception Desk at Council.

Nominations close at 5 pm on Wednesday 24 November 2021.

Send your completed hard copy application to Council, along with your 200-1000 word selection criteria and supporting documentation by mail to:

Judging process

Nominations will be reviewed by the appointed judging panel. The judges’ decisions are final and no further correspondence will be considered.
