Talented young creatives have been recognised at the City of Greater Bendigo’s 2022 Raw Arts Awards, presented by the Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf at The Capital last night.
The RAW Arts Awards showcase and foster the talents and artistic pursuits of young people under the age of 25 in the region and this year’s competition attracted 87 applications.
A winner and a highly commended entry are recognised in five categories: visual arts, literature, performing arts, short film and a new award Yo Bendigo/Ambedo.
Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said the RAW Awards and the exhibition provided an opportunity for young people to showcase their work, receive public and financial recognition and support further studies in their chosen arts field.
“RAW celebrates the creativity of young people and the quality of work produced is very high. We’ve endeavoured to keep the categories as broad as possible, so the contributions bring out the best of young talent in their chosen medium,” Cr Metcalf said.
“We received wonderful applications from artists, writers and film makers from 25 suburbs and small towns across the region.
“This year we introduced the Yo Bendigo/Ambedo Award to capture the experience of being a young person living in Greater Bendigo in 2022. Ambedo magazine is a free quarterly magazine designed, produced and edited for young people.
“I congratulate all of the winners and those who have contributed to RAW this year and shared their talent, their imagination and their stories.”
The evening at The Capital featured live performances, four short films and an awards presentation.

Literary Award:
Winner: Samantha Johnston for A Cappuccino
Highly commended: Yasmin Russell for Little Flautist
Performing Arts:
Winner: Tara Muscatello, music
Highly commended: Kalo Davis, music
Short film:
Winner: Ben Martin for Lure
Highly commended: Jin Turpie for The Spring of 1939
Visual Arts:
Winner: Leah Sigley for her painting In four days a top fashion CEO earns what a Bangladeshi garment worker earns in their life
Highly commended: Noah Dunstone for his digital art/photoshop manipulation for The Nonsensically Twisted Crowd of Undecided Pseudonyms
Yo Bendigo/Ambedo Award
Winner – Levity Camilleri for Pose/Poise
Winners in each category received a $1,000 cash prize and a $250 cash prize was awarded to highly commended creatives. The winner of the Ambedo prize was awarded a $500 cash prize.
The 2022 Raw Arts exhibition features this year’s visual arts entries and is open to the public from 11am to 3pm from today until Sunday June 5 at Dudley House, 60 View Street Bendigo. Entry is free and open to the public.
