‘Not a snowball’s chance’ – Police appalled at motorcyclist’s speed

A “stunningly stupid” display of speed has earned an unlicensed motorcyclist a day in court, an impound bill, and a lecture.

About 8pm on Wednesday, Road Policing Acting Sergeant Mike Biggans pinged the 46-year-old rider travelling 70kmh above the limit on State Highway 59, Porirua.

“At that speed, he was covering near 50 metres a second and didn’t have a snowball’s chance of reacting if something happened. The disappointing thing is he’s old enough to know the risk he was putting himself in, and other motorists.

“He said he was ‘blowing out the cobwebs’.

“It doesn’t bear thinking about what would have happened if he had come off, but he got to hear all the reasons why his riding behaviour was appalling.”

Since the speed exceeded 50kmh above the limit, the driver was charged with driving at a dangerous speed, had his driver’s licence suspended for 28 days and was summoned to appear in the Porirua District Court at a later date.

The motorcycle has been impounded.

Acting Sergeant Biggans said Police will be highly visible on our roads across the Wellington region throughout the long weekend.

“Humans are generally squishy objects, and we don’t fare well in collisions – that’s why Police put such an emphasis on speed, restraints, impairment and distractions… if you’re in a crash, they’re the biggest factors in whether you walk away or not.”
